The Los Alamos Rainbow Smoothie – A Scavenger Hunt Prize

PROJECT RAINBOW: THE SECRET CITY CODE-BREAK A Proposal for a High-Engagement Pop-Up & Scavenger Hunt

THE CONCEPT

In 2017, the “Unicorn Frappuccino” became a global phenomenon—a Starbucks drink so elusive that families spent days trekking across states just to find a store that still had the “fairy powder” in stock. It was the Cabbage Patch Kid of the beverage world.

Today, that formula is officially defunct. But here in Los Alamos, we have an advantage. Using our unique legacy of rigorous research and molecular modeling, we are “leaking” a new narrative: Los Alamos scientists have officially cracked the code.

THE EXPERIENCE: THE “CLASSIFIED” OVERLAY

We utilize the existing Los Alamos “Secret City” paper maps already in the hands of tourists and residents, but with a twist:

  • The Second Layer: Participants receive a semi-transparent “Classified” map overlay.
  • The Hunt: When placed over the standard town map, the overlay reveals hidden coordinates, secret menu items at local businesses, and “experimental” data points.
  • The Mission: Navigate downtown to collect the missing variables of the formula.

THE PRIZE: THE REPLICATED RAINBOW

The hunt culminates at a central “Lab” (a local third-space or pop-up venue) where participants earn the exclusive right to purchase the Los Alamos Rainbow Frappuccino.

  • The Science: This isn’t just a copycat; it’s a technical demonstration. Using pH-shifting technology (anthocyanin-based reactions), the drink physically transforms from purple to pink and from sweet to tart as it’s consumed.
  • The Campaign: A mock-serious press release and live “bench-science” demos explaining how our researchers stabilized the elusive sour-blue-drizzle.

WHY THIS WORKS FOR LOS ALAMOS

  1. Promotes the April 17 Film Festival: We can “whip this together” immediately as a high-visibility lead-in event. The scavenger hunt clues can lead directly to film festival venues and ticket booths.
  2. Drives Foot Traffic: The map overlay forces engagement with our existing downtown footprint and local vendors.
  3. Philanthropic Impact: 100% of proceeds go to New Mexico non-profits, turning a pop-culture mystery into community support.
  4. Vibe & Satire: It leans into our “Secret City” identity with a wink, celebrating our scientific culture in a way that is fun, family-friendly, and highly “Instagrammable.”

THE TECH BEHIND THE TASTE

The reconstruction relies on real molecular gastronomy. By using natural indicators (like red cabbage extract or butterfly pea flower) that react to citric acid, we create a drink that is both a culinary feat and a chemistry lesson.

This is why it’s fun, and also a whimsical joke. The truth is you don’t really need a the stuff below with chemists -there are dozens of recipes online and on YouTube doing stuff like this. But the potential … a Los Alamos (Long Island) Ice Tea that knocks your socks off (like carbonation hits your brain faster), not to mention there are fancy restaurants that do all sorts of cool chemistry stuff. The owner of Pig and Fig totally has the chops to handle this (did you know the country fried steak is gluten free?).

The Programming: A STEM Masterclass in a Cup

We are introducing a unique content layer designed for families, local youth, and even visiting professionals in town for interviews. The centerpiece is a high-production video featuring three local LANL chemists who treat the “Unicorn Drink Quest” as a legitimate R&D challenge.

  • The Theoretical Framework: The chemists demonstrate how a scientific team assembles to tackle a new problem. One expert breaks down the molecular behavior of citric acid, while another explains the spectral shift of a liquid that transitions from neon blue to clear.
  • The Scientific Method: We use this “mystery drink” to model how scientists test theories, iterate on formulas, and peer-review their findings.
  • Safety & Compliance: We address the “lab-to-table” reality—discussing the stability of mixing acids with lipids (like white chocolate) and the rigor required to ensure experimental food is both functional and safe.

The “Prize”: The Tri-Phase Quantum Sample

The ultimate reward at the end of the scavenger hunt isn’t a giant, sugary “confection”—it’s a precision-engineered experience. We recognize that after a three-hour hunt, parents (and kids) want something sophisticated and mindful of health.

The “Final Voila” Experience: The prize is a small, elegant “sample” served in a clear glass etched with three distinct calibration lines (marking the thirds). It is a kinetic, flavor-shifting journey in a single glass:

  1. Phase One: Sip through the straw for the initial base flavor.
  2. Phase Two: A quick stir “activates” the middle layer, inducing an immediate color change and a second, distinct flavor profile.
  3. Phase Three: A final mix followed by a 3-minute “dwell time” (allowing a slow-reacting botanical to finish its cycle) reveals the final color and flavor.

It is essentially the “Veruca Salt/Wonka Gum” experience, re-imagined through the lens of Los Alamos chemistry—a delicious, three-course meal of molecular science in a single, perfectly portioned glass.

NOTE: I DO NOT KNOW SCIENCE AT ALL I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT COLORS (and color-changing flow) WOULD ACTUALLY WORK AND MAKE SENSE. But if “clear” was an option, that would be magical. It starts blue, turns clear, then pink… that would be wild.

A Los Alamos MainStreet & STEM-Engagement Initiative

THE “TOP SECRET” BRIEFING (The Video Campaign)

Before the hunt begins, participants are “briefed” via a leaked video featuring three local LANL chemists. This isn’t a cooking tutorial—it’s a Technical Feasibility Study.

  • The Theory of Color Shift: One chemist breaks down the spectral analysis of pH indicators (e.g., Anthocyanins), explaining how a solution transitions from Blue to Clear to Pink based on acidity.
  • The Variable Challenge: A second chemist discusses the “Quest for the Sour-Blue Drizzle”—analyzing how to stabilize citric acid within a lipid-heavy white chocolate matrix without curdling the suspension.
  • The Peer Review: They demonstrate how scientists test theories, fail, iterate, and eventually reach a “conforming” result.
  • Safety & Compliance: A final segment on “Food-Grade Engineering”—addressing the safety of mixing non-traditional ingredients and why “Fairy Powder” must meet rigorous consumption standards.

THE SCAVENGER HUNT: THE MAP OVERLAY

Using the “Classified” semi-transparent overlay atop the standard Los Alamos town map, families and visiting professionals track down the “Missing Ingredients.”

  • For the Kids: A high-stakes mystery.
  • For the Parents: A deep dive into how scientific teams in Los Alamos collaborate when faced with a “New Challenge.”

THE PRIZE: THE “TRI-PHASE” QUANTUM BLEND

We’ve solved the “Sugar Crisis.” We realize that after a 3-hour hunt, a giant cup of corn syrup isn’t the goal—The Experience is. The prize is a small, precision-engineered “Flight” glass (4–5 oz) marked with three distinct calibration lines. This is the “Everlasting Gobstopper” of beverages:

  1. Phase One (The First Sip): Using the straw at the bottom layer, you experience the Base Formula—a cool, tropical mango-creme.
  2. Phase Two (The Activation): You stir to the middle line, introducing the Acidity Trigger. The drink shifts color instantly (Purple to Pink) and the flavor profile pivots from Sweet to Tart.
  3. Phase Three (The Kinetic Finale): After a 3-minute “dwell time,” a slow-dissolve botanical element at the bottom finishes its reaction. The drink settles into its final, distinct flavor and color.

“It’s the Wonka Gum of the High Desert—without the blueberry-turning side effects.”

THE IMPACT

  • Professional Recruitment: Shows visiting parents that Los Alamos isn’t just a workplace—it’s a community where even the snacks are intellectually stimulating.
  • Educational Outreach: Teaches kids the basics of pH, lipids, and chemical reactions through a narrative they already care about.
  • Community Support: A “breakthrough” that gives back—with all proceeds benefiting New Mexico Non-Profits.
