Richard Stallman: Free as in Freedom (and Also NOT Free Labor)

Richard Stallman launched the GNU Project in 1983 to fight for user freedom — not just to use software, but to inspect, change, and share it. His rallying cry was:

“Free as in free speech, not free beer.”

But in a world where billions live on less than $2 a day, we can’t ignore the “free beer” part.
Freedom without affordability is a privilege. And open source, if it’s truly about justice, must mean access for all, not just those with cloud credits and parents who cover their rent.

Today, as AI becomes the new engine of power, this question grows sharper. Everyone should be able to use, study, and build on large AI models — not just the tech elite. That means:

  • ⚖️ Tiered access models
  • 💸 Subsidies or discounts for low-income users
  • 🙅‍♀️ Not demanding rock-bottom wages from the global South to power trillion-dollar systems
  • Not asking people in poor countries to write code or participate in projects for free.

Stallman fought for ethical software. But now the revolution must go further — not just free as in freedom, or free as in price, but fair as in shared power and not working for free.
