About the Dusoma Foundation
Dusoma Foundation is a humanitarian tech initiative based in Los Alamos, New Mexico. We start where our partners and users already are: East Africa. Built on GPT, our tools can serve more than 20 African languages, including Swahili and Kinyarwanda.
Our vision
Marla.AI, the Dusoma AI product, will compete with the biggest names in AI – ChatGPT, Grok, and Gemini. The first never-for-profit, poverty-centered AI that is “full stack woke” and make by the people, for the people, for the benefit of the people. Dusoma’s Marla.AI is an open source project that not only aspires to be free-of-charge to use, but can actually provide gig work through the interface. (Learn more in technical specifications).
Today we give our refugee researcher and subject matter experts a smartphone, dependable internet and UBI so they can help us create fit-for-purpose emergency funding AI apps. We train AI on what matters for daily survival and dignity.
What we build
Specialized apps that will answer urgent, practical questions:
- “How do I get food today?”
- “How can I access $50 in emergency cash?”
- “Where can I get free menstrual pads, anonymously and safely?”
Marla, our AI guide, routes people to verified options, translates as needed, and documents outcomes so we can learn and improve.
How it works
- Devices: We aim to subsidize low-cost Chinese phones through donor funding and OEM partnerships, with an emphasis on high quality, affordable phones that take superior photos of medium-complexioned skin.
- Connectivity: We pursue zero-rated access with telecom providers, expanding on models like Facebook Free Basics to include a broader set of life-saving services and sites.
- Distribution: We deploy in Gorom Refugee camp (South Sudan), Kakuma Refugee camp (Kenya), and Mahama Refugee camp (Rwanda).
Why East Africa
This is where our initial pilots, language capacity, and relationships are strongest. Concentrating effort allows us to prove impact quickly, then replicate. Our AI developer team is based in Evanston, IL, with additional developers around the world. Over half the Dusoma team is based in east Africa.
Early results
With just a couple thousand dollars per person, two users moved from a refugee camp into an apartment with running water and electricity. These are small numbers, but they show how targeted support plus clear pathways can change a life fast. Our next milestone is to help 20 additional individuals (who are currently working for hourly wages) also relocate to a safer setting.
Our capital model
We are philanthropy-first. Not just a “Not-for-Profit” – but a “Never for Profit” We use grants and catalytic gifts to validate outcomes at low cost. If and when sustainable revenue appears later, our top priority is permanent, situation-changing relief for workers who live in extreme poverty (including evacuation from areas experiencing hunger and violence).
Safeguards and values
Privacy, inclusion, and transparency are non-negotiable. We design for safety and dignity, especially for LGBTQ+ users and others at risk. For our data approach, see “Dusoma Ethical Data Collection: What if We Weren’t Total Bastards.”
How you can help
We do need funding today. Even more, we need connections:
- Intros to telcos, humanitarian tech visionaries, device makers, clinics, NGOs, and card networks
- Senior advisors and board members with the credibility to move systems
We are assembling a rockstar humanitarian tech board and will announce our first public figure shortly. If you can open a door, we will walk through it with focus and transparency.
Let’s build the humanitarian AI app that pulls millions out of poverty in just two years, and starts changing lives today. Let’s change the goal of what AI does and who it’s for.
